Hearing Association takes Ear Plugs to the Street
February 3, 2010
The Nelson Hearing Association, recipient charity of donations at Nelson Opera in the Park this year, is going to be giving away ear plugs and a vital message about hearing loss in Nelson and Richmond this Saturday, February 6.
Volunteers will be giving away ear plugs and balloons at the Nelson market in Montgomery Square, in Trafalgar Street and in Richmond Mall.
The Association says the message they have to give out with the ear plugs and a hard-hitting flier is for people who don’t realise the damage they can cause with personal space music such as MP3 players and in their cars.
Manager Ana Parkes says there’s an incorrect assumption it’s only the elderly who are affected by hearing loss.
“So many younger people are damaging their hearing without even realising it. We hope that the ear plugs and the flier will alert them to the dangers of having the volume too loud. It’s just a simple fact that your ears can’t take too loud a volume for too often without being affected,” she says.
Nelson Hearing Association volunteers will be handing out the fliers and earplugs and asking people to find out what they risk by using the ear plugs to have a sense of what it’s like to have a mild hearing loss. They’ll also have balloons for children.
“It’s a really good way of finding out what you could lose by abusing your ears. If this message saves just one person from losing some of their hearing, then it will have been worthwhile,” says Ana Parkes.
The Nelson Hearing Association was selected as the recipient charity for this year’s Nelson Opera in the Park by principle sponsor BioPaints and the organisers The Nelson City Council..
“The Hearing Association Nelson does a tremendous job across our region for those with hearing loss. They run on an incredibly low budget and rely on lots of support from volunteers, so it’s great that we can help raise their profile. BioPaints wants everyone to enjoy the concert for free, but for those who do want to make a donation The Nelson Hearing Association is a truly worthwhile local charity,” says BioPaints Business Manager Kathryn Barlow.
Money raised will go towards a hearing aid cleaning machine.
