GBG Meeting Notes - 17 November

Held at: Suburban Club, 8.00am

Kathryn Barlow, BioPaints Business Manager welcomed those attending and ran through progress to date.

The tickets were well received, colour and concept. Fresh and worked really well.

Kathryn ran through the media releases regarding the charities and encouraged anyone if they knew of any charities that may not have been nominated to get them do so and ran through the criteria to be eligible. The School prizes via a ticket count were also well received particularly a third prize enabling the smaller schools having a chance by percentage of tickets to role size.

One retailer advised they had been canvassing people on the beach and the response had been, they didn’t want a party, they wanted to go to the opera and not have children running around and other activities going on. Others responded that maybe, the party idea is a misconception. The idea is that there are community activities and stalls on out side the perimeter and the fun that is being encouraged is to get dressed up for the Opera. Have a beautiful picnic with all the add ons.

Kathryn advised the Council will be at the meeting next Tuesday 24th and opened the floor for suggestions and questions.

  1. How are the tickets to be distributed?
A method needs to be finalised along with the council as ticket numbers do need to be recorded.
Outlets will be: BioPaints and the Nelson City Council. Other outlets such as TDC.
  2. Security Fencing: It’s important for the retailers to know where the fencing is being placed in the park, how it is to work and when it is going up. There are several groups with ideas of activities that can’t go any further until they have this information. The amount of area on the exterior perimeter. What distance will it be from road - is there going to be room on the outside grass perimeter for other activities? Where will the fencing be? When will it be erected? Will there be any impact on existing concession holders at Tahunanui?
  3. The amount of area that is available and being allocated to various groups such as food, Art Stalls, Children activities. A suggestion was made that the area near the library might be appropriate for something as it is away from the main park as long as it didn’t impinge on access.
  4. To provide a children’s pack as as families enter. To include activites such as paper and crayons for colouring in, a colouring competition that could handed in at the end of the concert. Business would need to be asked to sponsor items in the pack. Could have vouchers from businesses in the pack as well – all sorts of ideas. Needs a business to pick up the idea and organise it.
  5. Parking was considered an issue. Where are the parks. Maybe buses could ferry people in from the near by car parks such as Mitre 10 or WOW. In doing so either of those places might be interested in becoming involved in some way? Is there a way for a charity to be involved in this?
  6. Children’s area - can an area be set aside for children’s entertainment? If so where and what size? Holiday Park offered to set up a 9 hole mini golf for kids.
  7. Uniquely Nelson Are they involved – dress up shop windows etc?
  8. Arts Council – Lloyd Harwood - Special Twilight Market opportunity - need information from NCC.
  9. Tahunanui Business website to link to GBG info page. Other businesses invited to link to GBG page as well.
  10. Children’s activities not intended as a crèche – will need parents supervision. Possibility of Big Dig?
  11. Other transport options? Old Newmans bus, double decker bus?
  12. Security – what will be provided, opportunity for community groups, sports teams to raise money?
  13. Possibility of a longer event - 3 days , roll into Sunday etc etc.
