GBG - Brainstorming Meeting 13 October 2009

Thank you to the almost 40 businesses that attended this brainstorming meeting.
Draft Notes:
- Thrilled Biopaints have come to the party, Beach Road is a fantastic site for this event.
- Possible charity buckets at the event to support a nominated charity.
- Be great to have stalls around the perimeter/festival and community set up.
- Biopaints is the only sponsor for Opera in the Park but not the event management and are committed to 3 years sponsorship. The event organiser is the NCC Festivals Group.
- Build up the event with minor events leading up to and following on from the Nelson Opera in the Park.
- Possible Opera Walks to be organised around the Quay.
- Make this an iconic Nelson event.
- Logistic issues include stall times and access for those stall holders – this needs to be integrated into the day.
- Use existing businesses to promote in advance.
- Have cordoned off areas for children/families.
- Widen range of age groups attending and widen appeal to these age groups.
- Expect a capacity of 15,000.
- Create a sense of anticipation prior to the event – get bus loads, picnics.
- Tourism potential enormous.
- Restaurants in area and along Quay could advertise pre and post Opera in the Park meals.
- Make a definite link between the city and the park.
- Theme for kids to dress up or perhaps a music competition.
- Make the event a great one for hospitality so businesses can entertain their clients and offer further networking opportunities.
- Organise hospitality packages to sell onto corporates.
- Work on transport to make it fun to get there.
- Get Tasman involved with the event.
- Themed up busses and public transport to minimise parking problems.
- Encourage businesses to bring staff and families perhaps have businesses put up tents for staff and their families.
- Arrange a special supervised area for children to be entertained and be in a safe zone.
- Tahuna Holiday Park happy to sponsor children entertainment programme.
- To gain international attention get a live stream going from the event – perhaps balloons or blimps in the sky.
- Motel Association suggest publicity off website to maximise visitors to the region attend the event.
- The historical significance of documenting initial GBG meeting and document event on the day – get good coverage of event for film/documentary.
- Early timetable of event from council required.
- Perhaps Opera in the Park should have its own website.
- Identity of event required eg Nelson Opera In the Park.
- Give Nelson Tasman businesses first opportunity to be involved in Opera in the Park.
- All businesses can add link about their business to the site.
- Create a party atmosphere in a short time frame.
- Encourage participation from Tasman and Golden Bay – possible use of boating in up the Blind Channel at the back beach.
- Subsidise transport from Golden Bay.

2. Theming needed to make event a party atmosphere.

The same group have agreed to meet in one month’s time to move ideas forward and have council festival staff available to confirm event management and logistics.
These notes to be emailed to all participants and call for options for creative and admin thinkers to develop these and new ideas.
